An Adult and Child
Learning Community
According to Montessori understanding, the first six years of life are the most fundamental to the development of human beings and the realization of their fullest potential. During this time, the infant and child’s physical development is phenomenal and inspires our care and attention.
Montessori Playgroups at Grano Montessori in Bloomington, Indiana, provide parents and caregivers with a unique opportunity to engage with their children as they exercise their independence by exploring this specially prepared environment. Furniture and materials in the room are carefully chosen and designed to aid in the development of movement and coordination, independence, language, self-discipline, and cognitive skills.
The intent of each Adult and Child group is to support your important role as your child’s first teacher. Through observation and interaction, you will witness the natural development of your child.
All classes are facilitated by Amanda Grano, an experienced, Montessori-trained teacher who serves as a guide and mentor for adults and children. She introduces activities to infants, children and adults, helping the child develop social skills, communication and a sense of belonging to a group. Classes will be held in Amanda's home where the environment will be carefully prepared for the developmental needs and interests of the infants and toddlers.
These classes also help to deepen understanding of Montessori philosophy and its application in the home. Through both interaction and observation, parents and caregivers gain valuable insight regarding their infant and child’s path of development.
As part of each Montessori Adult and Child session, adults gather approximately once month for a discussion event outside of classroom time. This event features an overview and discussion of a topic pertaining to child development and parenting, and serves as a forum for the adults to share and exchange information with each other. Topics are chosen based on what is observed during group or requested.
Topics may include:
• Observation
• Food and nutrition
• Sleep
• Setting up the optimal home environment
• Communication and language development
• Development of movement – fine and gross motor skills
• Diapering, toilet learning
• Personality development
• Mobiles, music, materials/toys, and play
• Sensitive periods
• Encouraging independence
• Discipline and behavior concerns
Along with the selected multi-week sessions and the monthly discussion group, registered new families receive a book on Montessori with the young child.

Amanda is a passionate Montessorian and works to honor the young child. She encountered the Montessori world in 2007 and has been entranced ever since. After years working with three to six year olds, she now wants to bring Montessori to parents and younger children.
Amanda believes deeply in the Montessori philosophy and method of education which centers around a profound respect for the child and honoring their individual paths. She also considers Montessori a philosophy for life and has been using elements in her home for years.
Amanda’s background includes an AMS (American Montessori Society) 3-6 credential, a MAED, and presentations at national Montessori conferences and webinars. She’s a lifelong learner and never passes up a chance to take some training herself.
Finally, she’s a parent to a four year old and has spent the last four years carefully preparing spaces in the home for an infant, and now a toddler. With great respect for the child and personal understanding as a parent, she’s now sharing Montessori with other parents and their children.
